Paul William Hateley

28 November 1948 - 24 August 2026

Paul carved his own way through life, fair, calm and dependable, with side of stubborn streak that meant once he believed something was right, he stood by it.
He had an extraordinary ability to see the good in people, if someone needed a hand, he was usually the first one there, and he had a habit of collecting strays, both the two-legged and four-legged kind.
Over the years he guided, moulded, an mentored many a young man, quite literally dressing them out of his own wardrobe. .
He’d bring someone home for lunch, and without hesitation, quite happily give them Julie’s lunch
That was simply who Paul was, giving, selfless and incredibly dependable.
He put blood, sweat and tears into his work, but nothing compared to the place he had in his heart for the love of his life, his wife and soulmate, Julie, and the immense love and pride he had for his children and grandchildren.
He leaves behind far more than the work of his hands.
His influence lives on in the people he encouraged, the young men he helped, the people and animals he gave a home to, and the family he loved so fiercely.
A mighty Tōtara has fallen.
A man who stood strong, gave shelter to others, and left his mark on the land and on countless lives.
